{Before & After} Tearing Down Walls

When we started our kitchen renovation, as much as it was the top of the to-do list, it really wasn’t in the cards. We wanted to update flooring but quickly came to the realization that if we wanted to make some structural changes to the house, we had to do this before we installed the floor. When opening up a wall, you need to add a temporary wall, for us to make this change later on in our reno, we would have had to screw right into our new floors. This was not a mess we wanted to deal with!

Kitchen: Before

Like most people, I really wanted an open concept space. From the day we looked at the house, I knew we needed to do something to improve the function of our house. The house used to be a 4 bedroom bungalow, but one bedroom was removed to create a large eat in kitchen. As I’ve said in previous posts, we bought the house because we liked the kitchen, but I knew this was our big opportunity to make changes. I wanted to show you some photos of before and during our renovation to outline exactly what our house looked like before and after we opened up the space. It really has made a huge difference.

Living Room: Before

Living Room: During

When we were planning the reno, I wanted to move the kitchen from the small nook here, so the function could be improved. Opening the kitchen was going to give us space for an island, a breakfast area and more than enough entertaining space.

These walls just screamed to me to hold our cabinets. How could they not? It was just too perfect. Opening the wall up gave us so much light through the kitchen windows as well. Since we’re only in a semi-detached house, we only have light from one side of the house. With the house facing west, we have a ton of natural light in the afternoon/evening in our living room, but now we get the extra light in the morning.

Coming next selections for our kitchen!
